Kobudo analysis

by harlan on Mon Jan 11, 2010 10:45 pm

Came across this video today, and my first thought was, 'What am I looking at?'

Any comments, analysis, points or background would be appreciated.

Hi,

what are you wondering about in that kata?

Background of the Kata:

It is a kata out of the Ryukyu Kobudo of Taira Shinken, the creator was Kanegawa Gibu the grandfather of Taira Shinken.

Thank you, Tgall, for the reply, and for naming the style. Still a beginner here, and the original video was labeled 'Hamahiga no tinbei'. I wasn't sure if it was a)tinbei kata created by Hamahiga or b)some 'standard' weapon kata (by Hamahiga) being performed with tinbei.

I'm still unfamiliar with tinbei, and watching this video is new territory for me. Attempting to interprete the actions...I was onfused as to the whether the baton was meant to be a knife, or bo, or if this was an empty hand kata being performed with weapons.

Harlan.
Tinbei Kata, typically have the Shield (the actual tinbei) and a rochin , which can be any kind of dagger, short swords, short spear, or cudgel. I cant see the video right now since my company blocks youtube, but if you say he has a baton its probably just to represent the Rochin.

as an aside, most of what ive read (being at work i have no quotes to pull) list Hamahiga being a place/island and not a person. This is in reference to your statement about the kata possibly being created by Hamahiga.
