Empty Hand Kata Teaching Weapons Disarm Type Bunkai?

by shoshin on Wed Feb 17, 2010 2:52 am

Whats your experience,

im particualry interested in the Okinawan Kata, and the Bunkai taught within the Lineage as opposed to our more personal developments/interpretations (which of course have huge value to each of us) .

I have never been taught ANY Kobudo weaponry disarm type Bunkai from our main kata set, not in Sankukai, Shito Ryu, Matsubayashi or indeed Matsumura Seito.

I have been shown a few 'tricks' in terms of weapon type Bunkai applications, but these were not part of the lineage teachings and not really relevant to kata per say.

I have bene shown Bunkai when im grabbed, to stop me drawing a weapon for sure, im talking more about disarming Bo etc etc (as per the Shotokan Bassai Sho formal Bunkai I beleive, yes its fairly stupid but it does show work against the Bo).

What say you?

I've learned a couple things from Saifa kata for a weapon coming at you, they seem pretty effective, we tried them out at full speed with spatula's (lol) and they worked decently...which means every third time or so when the opponent is really trying to get you. Definitely not perfect, but good, reliable gross motor methods for avoiding/controlling a weapon.

I like messing with that stuff, and I think there's some merit to the idea that Karate technique can work against weapons, but I try not to dwell on it too much because I think that weapon avoidance/retention/whatever is a pretty specialized field. When we worked it in class it was always under the premise that it is largely theoretical. I think it's very easy to go all "hollywood" with weapons stuff...and that extends to arts that are primarily weapon arts too..for instance I would put more faith in a couple of gross motor controlling methods than I would in alot of what you see in some FMA and Silat schools.

yes, I have of course done the same Zach,

Im more interested in the 'traditional' lineage stuff more than the 'any motion can do anything' type of approach (which I thoroughly enjoy and support by the way, within sensible bounds).

What about specific weapons defence strategy and tactics held within kata, to help take it away from Bunkai?

As I mentioned here, in this recent thread, I've not been taught any.

Well, as Goju does not have it's "own" kobudo, i would say that the "this move can be this" thing is about as far as my knowledge goes with regard to Goju katas, I don't find it out of the question that the techniques were intended to serve this dual use either, after all there were bladed and blunt weapons in Okinawa too.

I don't remember practicing empty handed against kobudo weapons when I did matayoshi, but it wouldn't surprise me if such stuff is done.

I was always taught the MAN with weapon has the ADVANTAGE.

But I have trained empty hand against Kubodo weapons, the only real believable defense are against wooden weapons like the Bo, Tonfa and Nunchuka each has a weakness the Bo is the middle of the staff , The Tonfa is the handles; the Nunchuka the string/Chain the ends are too powerful. Of course these weakness can be used against you if you misjudge. THe large bladed weapons like the Kama & chain, Katana and true Sais are pissing in the wind, you are gonna get wet in Blood the damage is more then a busted arm like in theory a hit wuth wooden weapons. Imagine twin palming a 36" long blade coming toward ya. I never hope to see that coming, on the real.
