Marcel - of all the koshi I've seen applied to naihanchi, I like your's the best. A very crisp, clean and focussed performance. Thanks for sharing - I liked it very much.

good job Marcel and nice work posting it publically - I hope we can see more of your training going forward.

It's obviously different in emphasis to our Ryu, you have excellent technique IMO.

My school did. Body testing was always a part of naihanchi practice.

Shime in naihanchi is usually only from the Higa Yochuku lineage. This is due to his influences and studies in Goju Ryu with Miyagi and Shinzato.

Zach,

You can watch Higa Sensei perform Shime with some of his "younger" deshi on my clip on my Youtube page at @ 5:40:

When you have the time, that series has some awesome Goku-ka performing!

Interesting. Also I always notice that Naihanchin stance from some Shorin practitioners doesn't look that far from an equal-footed Sanchin stance to me, rather than the kiba-dachi type stance you sometimes see.

Yes - I've lately thought that it is possible to see a gradual transition from the "zhan bu" battle stance of xingyi (sometimes called the "rowing posture") to the zhan bu / chien be of Southern White Crane (which approximates seisan dachi in some shorin schools) to goju sanchin, to wing chun's "A" stance where the feet are on the same line but sanchin width, to mabu (horse stance, but narrower than Okinawan kiba dachi) to kiba/naihanchi dachi...

Who knows?

That's what I've always thought. Higa Yuchuku studied first with Jinan Shinzato but was a close friend of the Miyagi family. His shorin art was clearly heavily influenced by goju.

His koshi is also quite distinctive, influencing many karate schools today such as Ohtsuka Tadahiko's Goju Kensha, for example.

To my mind, he was one of the major influences in evolving the practise of naihanchi sho in the 20th century. That said, his naihanchi is not my cup of tea, but I give credit where it is due; his karate certainly has many strengths!

Hello everybody
Sorry for the late entry to this thread, but I'm new to the forum.
Before I start, I would like to say, that english is not my native language, so if I make mistakes or use the wrong term, you'll know why. I apologize in advance.

I've read the various entries and watched the youtoube links. It is quite clear that the different ways of doing kata are based on different paradigms and definitions. Someone once said that you define reality by way of your definitions. In other words, our definitions of what is important and what should be, steer our mind to look for those things. If using the hip to accelerate my technique is paramount in my arsenal of energy sources, then I'll try to implement it everywhere I can. It's the logical step to take.
I'm not saying this is wrong or right. Im saying that maybe the discussion could be: why is koshi so important to some practitioners (and not to others).
I believe that in kata, there is no room for basic technique, nor physical development. Those things have to be developed prior to kata. I think that kata is the most pragmatic tool we have when we have to study by ourselves. Everything in kata should be directed towards the optimal use of the body in combat. There is no room for second best... Having said that, one must have in mind that kata is more than a string of bunkai. I believe that Naifanchi besides having a set of techniques applicable to combat (and by doing so, a definition of combat strategy and tactics), is also a study of energy sources available in the human body applicable to the acceleration of limbs to deliver energy.

This is the way I do it http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfT99cfSLZA&feature=fvsr
Bear in mind that I come from a Wado tradition :o)

Coincidentally your post is exactly one year to the day of the previous post. :D
